JFK: Sincerity is Always Subject to Proof

From John F. Kennedy's Inaugural address:

So let us begin anew--remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.

Sincerity is what we look for more than anything else in our politicians. As we look, we are more often to find a lack of it than any measurable amount present. Even having spoken these words, we now know JFK to have been insincere to his family, but we still hold him irreverently in high regard because we felt he lived up to that statement where we, the American people were concerned…perhaps as we will continue to champion Tiger Woods because his "transgressions" take nothing away from our collective enjoyment of him as a truly great sportsman.

It is the second line in this quote that brings me to the subject of the sincerity of our new President. He actually used this line, but has since shown us anything but fear as a divining rod guiding his policy…whether it be the war in Afghanistan, or in being subservient to the wishes of the banks. He is either utterly afraid to upset either side of the political divide, or we would have to consider another…even more unfathomable reason for his lack of reason. Perhaps we will have to swallow a very acerbic pill, and do just that.

Fear first. My takeaway from his speech on escalating the war in Afghanistan was he was appeasing both sides of the aisle…escalating while at the same time, speaking of our exit in eighteen months. Escalating makes right happy. Leaving makes left happy. Here's the problem…as long as he is talking in terms of "winning" this war, there will be no exit. Not in eighteen months, not in a century. He knows this, which means he is being insincere in selling us on continuing this war…remind you of anybody? In fact, did his speech sound eerily familiar to our last President? If you answered "no" to that question, you are in denial.

We cannot win this war because by the mere fact we are sending in more troops, we are handing over victory to our adversaries…terrorists. They fight a different kind of war. Their ultimate goal is to bring down the American way of life…our economy. Everyday that we are there, they win. We cannot afford this war, they know that. They succeeded in making us desperate and foolish in regard to our economy after 9/11. President Bush told us to go shopping, and we did, oh yes, we did. Now we are spending money we don't have to continue our economic erosion…who is winning this economic war? The very people we want to defeat. Defeating them in my opinion would be to make our country prosperous again. Bring our troops home to protect us here. Give that money instead to entrepreneurs and businesses that want to hire our citizens. Now that to me would be our win against terrorists who hate us for our freedoms. Killing us is not their goal…taking down our nation, our spirit, our fearlessness is. You win a war like that by doing the exact opposite they want you to.

The only other reason we can consider for the actions of our President on all fronts…he has an insatiable thirst for power, coupled with the same hubris that possessed our last president…for that matter, the majority of our politicians. This is that acerbic pill I truly don't want to swallow, and never ever thought I would have to worry about with Obama. It is worse than fear, because fear is something we all can at least relate to in some way or at some level…power trips, ego driven, self centered power mongers make bad decisions and never learn from their mistakes.

Sincerity is always subject to proof. So, President Obama…quit lying to us. Quit making us weaker. Quit with your power trip. Remember the credit you gave the American people in your campaign, and realize we have the power to hold you accountable. Prove to us you meant what you said on the campaign trail…prove your sincerity. It is not too late to give us the man we voted for, and it is my greatest hope that you will change.

I'm just asking you to imagine a different speech on Tuesday night…a different message to the terrorists. What if it went something like this:

To Al-Qaeda, to the Taliban…ENOUGH! America will not succumb to you, we will not lose this war. We know how to win it…by renewing the freedoms that come with being a prosperous nation. To that end, we will end our occupation in Afghanistan, bring our troops home, and begin the process of rebuilding the wealth of a nation and people that you will be powerless against. Our strength is in our unity, in our common goal for freedom and a way of life that yes, you were successful in shattering on 9/11, but powerless to continue…you will not break us. You will not divide us. You will not impoverish us. We are stronger than you. Our troops will serve to protect our borders here at home…American soil will not be open to attack as our 100,000 troops will be here making sure our enemies are stopped at every turn. You will be defeated by not just our troops, but by all Americans.

Would that not be the change we believed in? I recognize I'm not in an expert position to be suggesting anything….but it seems to me that when you have an enemy, you play to their weaknesses, not their strengths, right?

First of all Lisa let me be blunt and to the point. This by far, is the most sincere, quality , and to the point piece you have writen to date.

I will take a moment to remember the Lisa that I had the privilege to read and personally speak with a year ago during the excitement of the Obama campaign. You were his greatest supporter.

Displaying the Obama won flag following his election for several weeks.

In retrospect , I believe that you, like myself was captivated by the possibility of positive change that Obama presented to the constituency.

Green as he may have been, most were enthusiastically enthralled by this man that tirelessly traveled the U.S. listening to the american people , spreading a message of hope and help.

B.S. ? Perhaps. But I as a logical progressive human being must take into account the insurmountable obstacles that Obama and company must encounter an a daily if not hourly basis.

The only fault that I find with this man, is that he had the gall to run for an office that he isabsolutely unequipped to excel at. And that of-course is where the possibility of egotistical manic ego comes into play.

At any rate, I believe we've been played dear Lisa.

Respectfully.

Raymond Max.

Yes Ray...we have. I cannot even describe how much that has saddened me. One of the biggest letdowns of my life...he tapped into our collective psyche, our rawest emotions...he worked us better than any "player" I've ever run into...including my first husband!!! So here we are...wonder if he'll ever listen, or just end up a one term Pres....so sad.

This is an excellent article, Lisa, thanks for pointing me to it. Well argued from your perception. It proves what you feel and fear, and I respect that. But you judge this man too hastily because of your own insecurities.

Your argument shows that, though you voted for him and supported fim, as you say, you could not have had much faith in him because immediately something doesn't go to your liking (and he's only had a few months), you begin to ostracise him and accuse him. That is not the mark of true faith and trust. It is the mark of an opportunist who jumps on a bandwagon when it is winning and jumps off equally quickly when it hits a mudslide.

So I have to put your disappointed comments in that context: that your support was superficial, you expected perfection and now that you're not getting it, you easily rurn against him because that support lacked depth and true empathy. You won't even give him the first term to prove himself, despite the terrible legacy he interited from the past president. You want him to prove himself immediately and over a few months. That's a very shallow and expedient kind of support.

To Al-Qaeda, to the Taliban…ENOUGH! America will not succumb to you, we will not lose this war. We know how to win it

Errr...I thought this was the gist of what President Bush was saying ever since he invaded Afghanistan?

Sincerity is always subject to proof. So, President Obama…quit lying to us. Quit making us weaker. Quit with your power trip. Remember the credit you gave the American people in your campaign, and realize we have the power to hold you accountable. Prove to us you meant what you said on the campaign trail…prove your sincerity. It is not too late to give us the man we voted for, and it is my greatest hope that you will change.

The President is not making America weaker, he is making it much stronger but you are blind to anything positive in his actions. Some of his decisions might not make sense now but, as I said elsewhere, I am willing to give him at least the first term to show me what he is doing. That's what his predecessors have had and he deserves no less in his elected role.

I first saw Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention during the '04 election. I vowed that night, that if he ever ran for President, I would vote for him. By the time he announced his candidacy, I head read as much as I could about him, and was elated. Looking back on it, all I had to go on was his words. There was not much to measure him on in legislative action. Republicans that whole time, were pointing that fact out...we didn't really know what he would do without a history to base it on...I ignored that little fact, but if he was in fact sincere, his actions would bear it out.
I didn't jump on any bandwagon in calling him out early on...in fact, it was exactly the opposite. While everyone else was still feeling enamored, I was watching what he was doing. His decisions have been consistent since he started making them, and no...I'm sorrry, but they have been at best short-sighted, at most...irresponsible. Why he chose to surround himself with Wall Street and Citigroup people should have been everyone's red flag...but we sat back and gave him high approval ratings instead...questioning nothing. Now look at us almost a full year later. Geithner should be fired...if not investigated for his actions.
If we had been more questioning of Bush versus giving him the time, we would not have entered into the war with Iraq. It is when our Presidents are at the height of their political capital, that they abuse us the most, and we are paying attention the least.

I wrote this article on Dec. 30, 2008...before I became disenfranchised:

http://sperrys.newsvine.com/_news/2008/12/30/2260174-in-bush-there-was-a-flawexcessive-pride-always-goes-before-a-fall-will-hubris-take-down-obama-too

We can't just love our politicians blindly...we need to question their policy making before it is too late. I hope you will read this article...

Hear, hear!! We certainly agree on that, but perhaps for different reasons. He should never have been hired in the first place!

Agreed on that too, but not the minute something does not go to our liking. As I said before, he really can't please everyone all the time. Not possible!!

Okay...we have agreement on something...yeah! :)

My biggest beef early on, and to this day is his reponse/programs for the housing crisis. The only ones who like his HARP/HAMP plans are the banks because they are the only ones benefitting....$375 billion to modify 1,200 loans?! He told us first it would save 9 million homes from foreclosure, then he revised to 4 million, and here we sit...he has known that a voluntary program for banks could not work...even if he hoped it would, it has not...but he still won't do anything to correct that...boggles my mind!

Yes! Vested interests definitely being protected....the banks. If you look at where everyone on economic team came from, them protecting the banks interests makes sense. Unfortunately, that protection comes at our expense, and the expense of our economy.

Very good article. I think Obama's biggest problem is experience. He is in on the job training.
On winning, of course we can. We have the power to totally destroy Afghanistan. The two questions are is there the will to use enough force to win and would such a win be worth the cost.

Well, I guess we could nuke 'em...but there are terrorist cells everywhere, and their way of fighting is to destroy our economy ultimately...not to win in any ground gun battle. They win through terror...America has shown in past wars...ie Vietnam...that we are condtioned to accept that our troops will be killed. We are not "terrorized" by it...we go about our daily lives, thanking our troops for maintaining our freedoms. The terrorists know this...so they go after our freedoms...are we terrified now by our economy and the erosion of our middleclass? If we aren't...our indifference will get us...if we are...our fear will get us...they win either way unless we stop being distracted by a war we won't win by playing into their hand, bring our troops home, and take care of number one...at least until we put the "super" back into power!

Hi Lisa,

I share your passion, but disagree on one point which is a sticking point for me...I did not see George Bush the way a lot of people saw him..I was and am not in denial..I just saw George Bush as the President who kept us from another attack on our soil, although they did attack other countries in that time frame..I always thought he would have been better off to go in with a mass of troops and crush the Taliban for good...but I think he played around in that area for too long..I don't like war, never have, and never will, and I am not even sure there is a just war, however when attacked I believe an individual as well as a country has an obligation to defend himself/itself and we we're attacked, just as sure as Pearl Harbor was attacked...I don't have any children, but if I did my first priority would be to teach that child to defend him/herself..because I have learned as I am sure you have that if you don't believe in yourself then nobody else will, and I think Obama is a great example of not believing in yourself, because you are right about him wanting to have it both ways..George Bush was very simple when it came to our enemies..We are not responsible for how you feel about us as many in the media would have us believe we are..If people don't like you..I think it's almost pointless to try to get them to like you..At one time I would have said getting people to like you is the most important trait to acquire...but I was much younger and I digress...It's no secret that liberals have always been weak on defense..cow-towing to every two bit dictator that is on the Horizon..as an American I find that type of behaviour disgusting...you can be respectful to people without kissing their A**.Maybe in a 1,000 years I will find war disgusting... I don't know if you have ever seen Star Trek, but I am reminded of an episode where the Klingons we're fighting with the federation over some piece of land or something and These beings who we're pure energy put a stop to their fighting and said to the federation and the klingons "we find beings such as yourself most disgusting"

Anyway you sound like a wonderful person and I am happy to know you..even though we may disagree from time to time

Thanks Joe...my feeling is Bush had a huge opportunity...and the political capital...to go after the terrorists in the right way. Iraq was in his mind before he took office...he was dead set on going there, even if they had nothing to do with 9/11. I have written a few articles on that as well...he had our unified support, and he used it to take us into the wrong war. I see history repeating itself here...we have an opportunity to learn from our mistakes, but instead, we are repeating them...it is not Republican or Democrat...it is American, and we should all be feeling disgusted right now....together.

Ray...that is what I had hoped we would live down with Obama...live it down, get back to our strength...our allies have spoken after the speech, and they're sending us a clear message....I'm reading it as "you continue to stand alone in this...this is your war, not ours, and is not a war to fight." They still think it is misguided...they have learned from history/mistakes in Afghanistan. I cringe to think what they say about us now behind closed doors....they were so hopeful too.

the support wasn't just in America, it was almost world wide, in Iran there were thousands of people on the streets holding a candlelit vigil, but over the next year or so sentiment being poored out against islam that it fed into all of the jihadist's propaganda. As soon as we started the build up against Iraq, the whole Islamic world got the message, this isn't a war on terror, this is against islam. If it were against al queada & terrorists then only an idiot would attack bin ladin's only enemy in the arab world & support the Kurdish terrorists who were allied with alqueada & who are still attacking our NATO allies in turkey.

well that's a mouthful
