Thank you Michelle Obama.
You have my deepest gratitude in pointing that out for the so many, who have up to now, have not recognized this.
In this article, Part 1 of 2, let’s review what exactly has been “revealed about your husband:”
Michelle: I've seen it in teachers in a near-bankrupt school district who vowed to keep teaching without pay.
“This is leading not only to the prospect of larger class sizes, but also concerns that young people will shy away from entering what is suddenly a less-than-secure profession. The number of students earning credentials in California, for instance, has already dropped by more than 50 percent from its peak in 2003-2004, while enrollment in teacher preparation programs dropped by a third over the past five years.”
I could say “unintended consequences”…but, um…not thinking so unintended as necessary. We can’t afford teachers now cause we are building roads so businesses can be created by entrepreneurs instead!!! And just to be clear...are you somehow lauding teachers who work with no pay as the "new norm" to be expected?!
Michelle: And I've seen it in our men and women in uniform and our proud military families . in wounded warriors who tell me they’re not just going to walk again, they’re going to run, and they’re going to run marathons . in the young man blinded by a bomb in Afghanistan who said, simply, ‘‘I'd give my eyes 100 times again to have the chance to do what I have done and what I can still do.’’
So…as your husband ramped up troops in Afghanistan, told these soldiers and the American people, that they would ALL be coming home in 2014…did you not question your husband on the true facts? Only 30,000 “surge troops” coming home by then… your husband apparently lied to you too. The Original 60,000 U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan until 2024…because right before your husband announced we were pulling all troops out by 2014, he signed an agreement with Hamid Karzai keeping U.S. troops there until 2024. UN Coalition troops ALL leaving in 2014…NOT us. So you may look forward to many, many more needlessly wounded soldiers who would “give their eyes 100 times over”…coming home to a broken economy with no jobs for them either…at least until 2024.
Michelle: You see, Barack and I were both raised by families who didn’t have much in the way of money or material possessions but who had given us something far more valuable — their unconditional love, their unflinching sacrifice, and the chance to go places they had never imagined for themselves.
As a single mother who has given her daughter unconditional love and sacrifice her whole life…can you tell me why she no longer has the chance to go anywhere because college is now just too expensive? Even if it was still within reach…what’s it mean anymore? I don’t want her laden with HUGE Government student loan debt for a degree that means nothing more today then flippin’ burgers at McDonald’s upon graduation?!! Please tell me. College was affordable when I was young, and really…up until four years ago because institutions were not hawking/gauging Federal Funds…see what your hubbie hid in HCR on Education…answer is right there. Used to be colleges were looking for those who cared about academics, and were selective in those they chose. Now, it’s comparable to Banks…get the money, screw the student.
Michelle: And when my brother and I finally made it to college, nearly all of our tuition came from student loans and grants.
How nice for you. My divorced Mother of 5 paid for mine all by herself. No grants, no student loans. I worked as a paralegal intern eight hours a day, all summer long each summer to pay for my own food/entertainment each year, every year. But today...other than heaping huge student debt on our young people, how is your husband proposing to pay for my daughter’s and everyone elses’ education? Please do tell, but my inclination is not to accept debt we can’t afford, and the handouts you took from your country…
“nearly all of our tuition came from student loans and grants.”
NO THANKS. My family can’t afford the payback on that, and neither can our country. Cut Government funding and maybe, just maybe…our Academic Institiutions will bring tuitions back down to reality. Until that happens, our most prestigious academic institutions will keep raising tuitions to get the “HANDOUTS” you enjoyed and aspired to THAT WE CANNOT AFFORD!
Your speech revealed as much about you as it did your husband…and for that, we can only pray for change in 2012.
