WOW. If college isn’t expensive enough, now I’ve discovered a credit card fraud being perpetrated by HigherOne on both students and parents…and it is of the worst kind.
When My daughter enrolled for classes at Community College of Denver, they AUTOMATICALLY issued her a “HigherOne” refund credit card without her express permission.
The card arrived at my house, and my response at opening envelope “this is a scam, you don’t need it.” We tossed it aside, without a second thought.
THEN, my daughter dropped a class, and replaced it with one that garnered us an almost $700 refund. She got a call that if she did not pay for class she replaced it with, she would be dropped. She called me, and I called payment office. They told me that my “credit card had been refunded already,” and that payment on new account was due immediately…I paid it, then went to see if I had gotten credit on my charge card…I hadn’t. So I called back…not happy at all, and they told me credit was issued to my daughters HigherOne Refund credit card she was issued at enrollment!
What? They took MY money…and applied it to my daughter’s card in her name that she never signed up for??? First red flag. But, I dug out that card…it was a “refund card”…so I had my daughter set up her account for it online as I was told I could get refund fast once that was done. I did it myself, and it is designed TOTALLY for student misinterpretations BIG TIME! I’m an adult…I hit “Easy Pay” option, changed to ACH transfer, and immediately it set me up for a $25 wire transfer fee. I called in and customer support guy said changing from easy pay to ACH transfer required it now to be a wire transfer at $25 fee!!! So let’s say I just give up and take fee…I go back in, and try wire transfer, and it says Wells Fargo does not accept wire transfers!!
Furthermore, my daughter will be finished with her classes in May. I read the fine print on this card she never signed up for…if she leaves that school, they will automatically assess her a monthly fee she might never have ever been aware of if I had not read it! How many students are being ripped off blindly! How many are paying fees to get their refund money back? How many are sucked into this program thinking it is somehow good their parents’ money got refunded to them instead??
Is this the education/credit card reform Obama is talking about? Because if it is...he is espousing the same rip off policy he is bestowing on us in virtually every policy he has given us...I just thought education might be sacred still. Silly me.
They still have my $694.55, and it does not seem they want to give it back to me without a fight. If this has happened to you, please email me through here…I am going to embark on a class action lawsuit against HigherOne credit card company, and ANY college utilizing their services. This is beyond the pale…it is utterly disgusting. And it is going to stop.
